Who can guess what this image is of? If you guessed a brioche, you are partly right. It is the version of Couronne des Rois for Epiphany that you can find in most bakeries in the southern half of France, as opposed to the almond cream version and puff pastry in the North. Tradition calls for a charm to be hidden in the cake - whoever gets is it crowned King or Queen - and gets to buy to next cake. Available in limited quantities from The French Door Cafe by special order throughout the month of January with 48h notice. Included are the crown, and a charm for you to insert, per American health safety rules.
And if your tradition calls for what we in Charente-Maritime call "the Parisian version", all-butter puff pastry with almond cream, not to worry, you can order that as well. Ours is the oldest version, dating back to the Middle Ages apparently - just sayin!
